General Description
This is one of the nicest days of the trail for 3 reasons: 1. The view in the middle of the day is competing for the “Best view of the trail”. 2. It got a really cool downhill path with iron cables. 3. The day ends in the hut that without a doubt wins “The hut with the best view on the trail”.
I truly hope that when you walk this day you’ll have a good view, on severe rainy condition it is sometimes impossible to climb up.
We start the day in an easy descent until we join up with wide road leading up to the Friesenbergscharte. In the middle of the climb we reach the Spannaglhaus, a hut that used to serve as a place to sleep in the past. From this point the climb continue in a steep, rocky hiking path.
At the end of the entire climb, that should take about 3 hours, we reach the mountain pass – Friesenbergscharte (2904). The moment you’ll lift your head up you will see an amazing view of snow-toped mountains and a great clear lake at their foot. When you’ll lower your head back down you will see the steep downhill we need to walk in next (don’t worry, there are iron cables to support us).
After the steep section of the downhill we keep going in a path made out of little ascents and descents (the general direction is down) all the way to the hut.
The trail passes some earthly parts, and some rocky parts that were created from past avalanches. While walking we can see the beautiful lake and the dam creating it.
That last part of the day has the “is it much further?” effect – the view stays the same for the entire hour and every few minutes you think to yourself “I will probably see the hut after the next corner”. So I’ll make it easy for you – when you cross a bridge going over a steam, that’s when you are near the hut.
Sleeping: Olpererhuette of the German Alpine Club. As mentioned above, this hut wins “The hut with the best view”. Apart from that, it also got good rooms and good food.
The Olpererhuette is a super touristic hut. Reserve a place more than 2 days in advance. If it’s a weekend, even before.
