General Description

A day for ascending.

We start the day walking south, the bad part: the first two and a half hours of the day are walking on car road (there’s not even a sidewalk).

About one hour into the walk we cross the border to Austria, the border is nothing more than a sign and a stone on the road. After another hour and a half we reach the only permanently inhabited village in the Karwendel – the village Hinterriss.

In Hinterriss you can stop at a beer house to have a meal or just a bear, from this point we leave the car road and the ascent becomes more serious.

As mentioned, from this point we enter path number 231. Most of the path is basically a mountain bike path, but at some point the path separate from the bike path and becomes a walking trail (it acutely does that a few time, leaving the bike path and rejoining it).

After about 3 hours of walk we reach a place called Kleinen Ahornboden, which translate to “The Little Maple Back”. It is an open, flat, green area, with mountain ridges on both sides. From this point we start walking on the E4, which (at least at this point) is a pure hiking trail. After some time we join again with the bike path (that means you can theoretically walk the bike path instead of the E4. But I recommend taking the E4).

About 15 minutes before we reach the hut, we will pass in a mountain pass from which we will be able to see the hut. From the pass we start a short and moderate descent to the hut.

Sleeping: The Karwendelhaus hut of the German Alpine Club. A very big hut (can take in about 200 people), comfortable and modern.

It is important to note that this hut is a very touristic one, it is recommended to reserve a place more than 2 days before you get there. If you get there on a weekend that’s even more important. We got there on a weekend and it was packed.
